Redirection Over Rejection: How to Overcome the Fear of Failure
The fear of failure is a very well-known fear in our society…but apparently everyone doesn’t fear failure. Excuse me? Ya, I thought that was weird too…but here’s how it’s possible for you…
In my previous blog “The Irony of Perfection” we discussed how consistency is your key to success and achieving your goal. Let’s contemplate what that consistency might look like. Consistency looks like your continued ability to just keep trying. Maybe you’re an aspiring baker dreaming of owning your own viral cookie shop one day. You want to make a mind-blowing cookie but how? Start with what you know and then try something different. Add more salt, in fact add too much salt. Throw that batch out… add a little less salt the next time until your taste buds drool at the perfect sweet and salty bliss point. Can you picture the amount of cookies you’ll throw away? The number of times you’ll dramatically open your mouth as the chewed up cookie falls out of your mouth in disgust?
BUT…
Can you then picture eating that perfect cookie with the perfect amount of salt that blows all cookies out of the cookie aisle?
YES! YES, YOU CAN!
Why Failure Is Actually Your Path to Success
Your failure is your yellow brick road to emerald city. Each brick is another lesson learned that makes you smarter, faster, stronger, getting you closer to what you want and who you know you can be.
I used to fear failure as a rejection of my ideas. I would put myself out there and no one would respond, and I’d feel like a fool. Now I see how my response to rejection kept me small and safely guarded by the familiar. While the familiar is safe, it can also be boring and feel unfulfilling.
Rejection as Redirection
The way to overcome the fear of failure is to take rejection as redirection. Use the response from others as information that helps you pivot to a better direction. After all the yellow brick road is not a straight path, it winds through forests and fields of poppies but lest we forget… It ends at Emerald City with a bunch of new friends.
Rejection is Redirection my friends.
Dorothy, Toto, the Lion witch and wardrobe and little ol’ me are excited to see you at the Emerald City Party happening now!
